Are you ready to ruummble?
Bartenders, barbers and baristas will battle! Meat packers, managers and Maître ‘Ds will maim in the Aprons for Gloves 2012 Restaurant Rumble – a charity boxing event organized by the Aprons for Gloves Boxing Association to benefit the Astoria Boxing Club.
Founded in 1977, the boxing club has provided mentorship, direction and an athletic outlet for underprivileged inner-city youth. Sadly, after multiple relocations, the gym was homeless and forced to close. Funds raised from the Restaurant Rumble will go directly towards buying equipment and building a new gym.
JD’s has placed it’s hopes of victory with barber Travis “Upper Cut” Goeres. Temporarily sidelined by injury, Travis used his rehab time to learn how to catch flies with chop sticks and to perfect his famous, and much feared, upper cut.
To really pack a punch, Travis needs your help. He needs to reach his fundraising goal of $2000. Only then can he be considered a contender. This is your opportunity to ensure that Travis gets punched in the head, gut and groin – a fantasy many of you would like to see fulfilled.
Please go to the Aprons for Gloves Contenders page, sponsor Travis and then join us on July 25th for a rumble in the downtown east side jungle!

Happy Blue Monday. Research shows that the third Monday in January is the most depressing day of the year. Gloomy weather, post-holiday debt and low motivational levels are the ingredients for the cocktail of blah that is today. To cheer myself up on this dark day, I’ve been planning imaginary trips to sunny locals where my dollar goes a long way and motivation comes in the form of a rum filled coconut. It’s always handy to know a bit of the language when you travel, so here is how to say barbershop in tropical tongues.
Spanish: barberia
Filipino: barbero shop
Haitian Creole: kwafe magazen
Malaysia: gunting kedai
Swahili: kinyozi duka
Indonesian: toko tukang cukur
Thai: ran tadphm

It’s always tougher to shop for guys than girls. Agreed? But the most difficult gift of all? The guy to guy gift. Maybe it’s your boss that you’re shopping for, your best mate or some guy Dave, who’s name you drew out of a hat. You want to give a gift that says “I’m cool, you’re cool. Here’s your gift, let’s get on with it.” So skip the bottle of cheap scotch and give something that will last longer than the office party.
Those of you who remember our former barber Josh will recall that he partied (and dressed) like it was 1899. If you have someone on your list who likes things that stand the test of time, the Parker razor, brush and stand will be gift that they remember (like everyday when they shave).

Need to buy a gift for a fr-enemy? Why not get him a Parker straight razor and throw in one of your famous Sweeney Todd shaves? Available in cream, black and stainless steel. From $60

If you follow JD’s on FB or Twitter (if you don’t, you should) you’ll know how much I love the Wahl Peanut ($79). If you gave the Peanut last year here is the latest can’t-live-without item in the Wahl line up. Perfect for sensitive skin and it’s cordless (perfect for late for work car shaving) $160

November is a shitty month. It get’s dark early. Any ounce of sun left over from an indian first nations summer is long since gone. It also rhymes with ‘remember’. Like, remember when it was sunny and warm? To bring November a couple of notches above crap, a group of bruthas from a land down under decided to grow lip sweaters for the month and raise money for prostate cancer initiatives. Seven years on and $176 million has been raised.
At JD’s we go nuts for Movember. It’s balls out Mo grow for 30 days and we want you to join us. We’re looking for the 4:00 shadow guys, the baby faces who haven’t shaved since July, we even want your girlfriends (but you keep waxing gurrl). We’re looking for team members to help raise awareness and maybe a little $$ for the cause. Really, we just want to see what sort of ridiculous you can materialize on your face. Up for it? If you’ve passed by JD’s recently, undoubtedly you have noticed our newest addition. No, it’s not our new receptionists that I’m referring to. I’m talking about the glowing tubular beacon that guides the disheveled, the scruffy and the bearded beyond recognition to safety. We could have grown Rick Ruben’s beard in the time it took for us to get the o.k. to install a barber poll but it was worth the wait and we think you’ll agree.
