Happy Blue Monday. Research shows that the third Monday in January is the most depressing day of the year. Gloomy weather, post-holiday debt and low motivational levels are the ingredients for the cocktail of blah that is today. To cheer myself up on this dark day, I’ve been planning imaginary trips to sunny locals where my dollar goes a long way and motivation comes in the form of a rum filled coconut. It’s always handy to know a bit of the language when you travel, so here is how to say barbershop in tropical tongues.
Spanish: barberia
Filipino: barbero shop
Haitian Creole: kwafe magazen
Malaysia: gunting kedai
Swahili: kinyozi duka
Indonesian: toko tukang cukur
Thai: ran tadphm

My parents are real globetrotters and one of their favourite things to do when visiting a new place is to check out the local McDonalds. Surprisingly, for a chain that’s the poster-child of sameness and predictability, they vary wildly overseas. Anyhow, my thang when travelling is to check out the local barbershop and make JD get a hair cut, or rather a head shave (read: bald). Far better than any tourist attraction, a visit to a barbershop is a great way to tap into local culture.Barbering techniques also vary from place to place. JD once had is beard threaded by a Persian barber in Paris. Tears ensued. Sadly, I don’t have a photo of that experience but here are some photos of other barbershops around the world.
