Hair So Bad It’s Good

January 10th, 2012

POSTED BY - Riva P

I love camera phones. I love that I can pretend to be reading Lady Gaga’s twitter feed while taking a pic of someone in a dreadful outfit or (my preferred technique) pretend to take a pic of a friend but really I’m making a video of a drunk girl on Nightclub St. trying to order a slice of pizza.

Working in the hair biz, I also find myself trying to take pics of amazing (read: so bad it’s good) hair and hairdos. And why keep these candid photo gems all to myself when I can share them on a blog dedicated to pap-hair-azzi? Gorgeoushairs.tumblr.com is the brilliantay blog of a trio of Toronto based media wizards devoted to luscious locks. No one will ever top Jane Child in my books but this is the next best thing.

December 20th, 2011

POSTED BY - Riva P

We kicked off Movember this year with a shave-off event at Ray Rickburn hosted by TOM’s Shoes and yours truly. Big thanks to my staff who donated their time and demonstrated that they can behave themselves even when I’m not watching.

JD’s Gift Guide

December 16th, 2011

POSTED BY - Riva P

It’s always tougher to shop for guys than girls. Agreed? But the most difficult gift of all? The guy to guy gift. Maybe it’s your boss that you’re shopping for, your best mate or some guy Dave, who’s name you drew out of a hat. You want to give a gift that says “I’m cool, you’re cool. Here’s your gift,  let’s get on with it.”  So skip the bottle of cheap scotch and give something that will last longer than the office party.

Those of you who remember our former barber Josh will recall that he partied (and dressed) like it was 1899. If you have someone on your list who likes things that stand the test of time, the Parker razor, brush and stand will be gift that they remember (like everyday when they shave).

Need to buy a gift for a fr-enemy? Why not get him a Parker straight razor and throw in one of your famous Sweeney Todd shaves? Available in cream, black and stainless steel. From $60

If you follow JD’s on FB or Twitter (if you don’t, you should) you’ll know how much I love the Wahl Peanut ($79). If you gave the Peanut last year here is the latest can’t-live-without item in the Wahl line up. Perfect for sensitive skin and it’s cordless (perfect for late for work car shaving) $160

Movember Art Show and After Party

November 21st, 2011

POSTED BY - Riva P

There’s only a week left in the month of Movember. Has your moustache turned out to be everything you thought it would be? Has it made you feel more manly? Did it help you land your dream job or get the attention of the hot girl at work? Probably not. In fact, we’d bet our clippers that the progress of your Mo is inversely proportionate to you getting laid or getting a raise. The truth is, most guys do not want to grow a moustache and yet, they do it.

JD’s Barbershop, along with House Guest, Charlie & Lee and AKAjoncampbell wants to salute your commitment to the cause. So before you shave it off, show it off. We’re hosting a party on Thursday November 24th at House Guest in Gastown. There will be prizes for best moustache (girls and guys), moustache art for sale and partial proceeds from the night are going to Movember and the Shaun G Foundation. See you there!

Movember

November 7th, 2011

POSTED BY - Riva P

November is a shitty month. It get’s dark early. Any ounce of sun left over from an indian first nations summer is long since gone. It also rhymes with ‘remember’. Like, remember when it was sunny and warm? To bring November a couple of notches above crap, a group of bruthas from a land down under decided to grow lip sweaters for the month and raise money for prostate cancer initiatives. Seven years on and $176 million has been raised.

At JD’s we go nuts for Movember. It’s balls out Mo grow for 30 days and we want you to join us. We’re looking for the 4:00 shadow guys, the baby faces who haven’t shaved since July, we even want your girlfriends (but you keep waxing gurrl). We’re looking for team members to help raise awareness and maybe a little $$ for the cause. Really, we just want to see what sort of ridiculous you can materialize on your face. Up for it? Find out more here http://mosista.co/jdsbarbershop
